The Amputee Coalition of Toronto would like to offer its heartfelt support to those affected by limb loss as a result of the recent Ottawa transit collision.
Losing a limb to trauma can be one of the most devastating experiences in a person’s life. In addition to the physical pain of limb loss, there are so many thoughts, feelings and emotions to process. It’s easy to feel lost and overwhelmed while on the road to recovery. There will be new skills to develop, new terms to learn and a lot of hard work to get your life back. Fear and uncertainty of what lies ahead is something many of us experience as new amputees.
Our peer group exists to help support amputees and ease that fear and uncertainty. Through our
great community of amputees, we come together for each other as a source of comfort, guidance, and inspiration regardless of where we are on our journey.
We also recognize that families need our support too. It’s important to remember that such a traumatic experience can have a tremendous effect on spouses, children, and parents. Coping with the reality of what has happened to their loved ones, they are often left without time to process their own grief. Compartmentalizing emotions to push through everything leads to suffering in silence for extended periods of time. While PTSD is common for victims of trauma, the reality is that this can affect caregivers too.
Our community wants you to know that you, as the families and caregivers of limb loss victims, are not alone. We are also the family and caregivers of amputees who have experienced your stress, anxiety, and worry. The road is going to be long, but it doesn’t have to be lonely.
All of us at the Amputee Coalition of Toronto are here for you and your loved ones as you continue your journey to recovery. We welcome you into our community and to reach out to us for peer support during this challenging time in your lives.
